The visualisation of theatrical experience

Hedi-Liis Toome

In the presentation, a way to visualize the quantitative results of the research about the reception of theatre will be presented. The particular reception research was conducted in Tartu, in theatre Vanemuine and Tartu New Theatre in 2012. 1401 people answered an electronic quantitative questionnaire that was sent to them by e-mail after the performance. One of the questions in the questionnaire proposed 24 different performance characteristics which respondents had to rate on the scale from 1 (not at all) to 6 (very much). Factor analysis was used to assemble these 24 different characteristics into five factors: Aesthetic, Entertainment, Personally Challenging, Complication and Conventionality Factor. A visual map was created to interpret the factors and show the different parts of the theatrical experience. This visual map will be demonstrated in the presentation.
