Exploring Estonian Public Television Production 2004-2020 Using Big Programming Data
We report on a data-driven project exploring trends in the Estonian television landscape, using programming data from the Estonian Public Broadcasting (ERR) and a commercial channel, Kanal 2. Having been provided access to their internal Broadcast Management Systems, we describe changes in the prevalence of different types of content, the rise and fall of imported shows from different countries, and changes in the production mode of content on air, to the backdrop of a smaller dataset of viewer ratings. We propose the use of complimentary quantifications of prevalence and diversity to characterise the complex nature of media landscapes.
